Fiat joins BMW-Intel-Mobileye autonomous driving alliance
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has joined an alliance of carmakers and technology firms to help develop an autonomous driving platform open to all carmakers on a global level.
The alliance, formed by BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye in July 2016, sees the firms collaborate on a scalable solution that will cater for semi-automated driving to level 3 and fully automated driving (level 4/5). The solution is planned to go into production by 2021 with on-the-road testing due to begin by the end of this year using 40 autonomous vehicles.
FCA was appointed to the alliance for its engineering and other technical resources and expertise, as well as its sales volumes and set-up in North America. Its appointment follows the addition of a number of development partners and system integrators to the alliance.
“The two factors that remain key to the success of the cooperation are uncompromising excellence in development, and the scalability of our autonomous driving platform,” said Harald Krüger, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG. “With FCA as our new partner, we reinforce our path to successfully create the most relevant state-of-the-art, cross-OEM Level 3-5 solution on a global scale.”
The alliance is also calling for other carmakers and technology suppliers to join in developing the autonomous driving platform to create an industry-wide solution. For more of the latest industry news, click here.
