Fleet drivers in Belgium to be held directly accountable for speeding fines

By / 9 years ago / News / No Comments

According to a report by local website Expatica, a new database will provide the traffic police with the details of the drivers of company cars.

Figures show that one in four speeding fines issued are committed by company car drivers, yet company cars make up just 15% of all cars registered in Belgium. Part of this is down to the fact that some fleet drivers believe that their employers will pay their speeding fines, assisted by a legal loophole that means drivers of leased cars can be acquitted if they don’t pay traffic fines.

However, under the pilot project, police will be able to access a new database to find out which company leases the car and who the designated driver is. As the fine will be issued directly to the driver, this will overcome the legal loophole.
