The role will include leading the company’s operations in over 100 countries and territories, spanning Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.

GM chairman and CEO, Dan Akerson, said: ‘Stefan is a great addition to an already strong team. We expect him to continue building on his record of delivering results in markets around the world.’

Prior to his role at Volvo Cars, Jacoby’s career has included key positions at Mitsubishi and Volkswagen. He was said to have reached an ‘amicable agreement’ to depart the board and leave Volvo last October.

‘I’m excited to join a company that’s delivering beautiful, high-quality and fascinating vehicles and is committed to improving the total customer experience. The GM team has plans to win in every market, and I’m eager to contribute,’ he said.
