How MITIE’s mobile simulator will raise driver safety whilst lowering CO2 emissions
What is it?
The state-of-the-art simulator, which uses the latest training software, gives drivers the experience of challenging driving conditions, including varying light and weather settings, to improve their skills and safety.
Users are also examined on a distraction drive, which is a key component of the training. Drivers are asked to send a text message mid journey and are then shown a bird’s eye view replay of how their driving was impeded, illustrating the dangers of driving whilst using a mobile phone.
The simulator training enables drivers to advance their hazard perception and driving skills in a safe off-road environment – integral to getting safer, greener drivers on the roads.
What do the drivers have to do?
MITIE drivers first complete an online “Driver Risk Assessment”, enabling their training team to prioritise and tailor the “Driver Awareness Training” that involves using the simulator.
All high-risk drivers (eg those with any speeding points or involvement in any previous road traffic accidents) are invited to attend a workshop focused on their specific risk areas.
The software has been designed to improve driver safety and wellbeing whilst further reducing carbon emissions.
Who will use it?
Over the next year up to 1,000 drivers around the UK will use the mobile simulator, which MITIE reckons makes best use of their time and reduces the emissions and costs of traditional driver training.
The simulator is currently being taken on a tour across the UK and has already clocked up 20,000 miles of training.
Martyn Freeman, managing director of MITIE’s Facilities Management business, said: ‘This pioneering and industry-leading simulator software is one of the most exciting pieces of technology MITIE has produced in our effort to continually improve the health and safety of our people.
‘I have used the simulator myself and it is highly effective at teaching you about hazard awareness, emergency stopping and eco-driving. MITIE continues to be an innovator in health and safety and we anticipate huge reductions in road accidents in our fleet for many years to come.’
