Due to launch in 2024, it will sit at the top of the Ioniq brand – Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) line-up – following the Ioniq 6 EV saloon currently due to arrive in 2022 aand joining the current Ioniq 5.

It’s positioned as a large SUV based on a three-row configuration and dubbed a sport utility electric vehicle (SUEV) by Hyundai.

As with the similar Kia Concept EV9 also debuted at the show, it’s based on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP electric platform, already the basis for the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

Both brands have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2045 and their new concepts are intended to provide clear representation of the targets.

Powertrain details have not been disclosed but thanks to the E-GMP platform, both the Seven and Concept EV9 are expected to provide a range of over 300 miles, along with ultra-fast charging capabilities. Using a 350kW charger, the Seven is capable of charging from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes.

To aid aerodynamics and set it apart from ICE-powered SUVs, the concept uses a low hood, a single, streamlined roofline and elongated wheelbase. It also features wheels with integrated Active Air Flaps, which deploy or retract depending on brake-cooling or low-drag requirements, along with signature parametric pixel lights already seen on the Ioniq 5.

The E-GMP’s long wheelbase and flat platform floor also enable it to offer an interior architecture that “assures greater freedom and comfort for passengers”. Seating – designed to be “furniture-like” – can be customised to suit driver-controlled or autonomous driving modes; the intention is to provide a premium lounge experience.

To support this, the concept also features a Universal Island console, specially designed home appliances and a multi-functional Smart Hub graphic user interface.

The Seven also majors on using eco-friendly materials; the mineral plaster, bamboo wood and carpet, bio resin and interior paint used are based on renewable sources.

José Muñoz, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America, said: “The Seven concept demonstrates Hyundai’s creative vision and advanced technological development for our electrified mobility future. Its innovative interior space, eco-friendly powertrain and cutting-edge safety and convenience technologies reveal an exciting future for Hyundai SUV customers.”
