Isuzu Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation have inked plans to collaborate on the development of a next-generation light-duty fuel cell (FC) electric truck, aiming to start production in 2027.

The vehicle is based on Isuzu’s ‘ELF EV’ BEV light-duty truck

he vehicle is based on Isuzu’s ‘ELF EV’ BEV light-duty truck, launched in 2023, and will use Toyota’s new third-generation fuel cell system.

Ideal target markets include firms servicing supermarkets and convenience stores that require high-frequency, daily deliveries utilising refrigerated or frozen storage.

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are an effective solution for these demanding applications. Unlike battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which face long charging times, FCEVs offer rapid refuelling and superior driving range, making them well-suited for intensive operating environments.

Furthermore, FCEVs match BEVs in low vibration, minimal noise and zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to a lower environmental impact.

To address the challenge of high initial vehicle costs, Isuzu is optimising vehicle body structures and manufacturing, while Toyota is focused on innovations in fuel cell design and production.

The project will also draw on the technologies, expertise and insights gained by Isuzu and Toyota through their joint development of the ERGA FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) hydrogen bus, as well as the results of the FC light-duty truck social implementation project conducted by Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation.

The two companies said they will advance the sophistication of control technologies and system improvements to enhance fuel cell durability, achieving the high levels of reliability and practicality required of commercial vehicles.
