Mercedes-Benz reveals GLB compact SUV
Mercedes-Benz is expanding its SUV line-up with a new compact model to bring a rival to the Audi Q3.
Sitting above the GLA, the GLB marks the eighth model in the brand’s compact car family; in fact one in four Mercedes-Benz cars is now a compact model while one in three is an SUV.
Due to launch at the end of the year, the GLB will be offered in five and seven-seat variants. Boot space on the five-seater ranges from 560 to 1755 litres while the second-row seat can be slid forwards and back and the angle on the backrests can be adjusted to increase boot or passenger space as required.
Full engine line-up brings new-generation four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines updated to offer significantly increased power, improved efficiency and emissions, according to the brand. A PHEV version is also expected to join the range.
Petrols cover the 163hp GLB 200 with seven-speed DCT and NEDC Correlated CO2 emissions of 137-142g/km and the 224hp GLB 250 with eight-speed DCT and 165-169 official NEDC Correlated CO2; both are front-wheel drive.
Diesels include the 150hp GLB 200 d with eight-speed DCT and 129-133g/km CO2 on the combined NEDC Correlated cycle; this is also offered in a 4Matic four-wheel drive version with 136-144g/km. At the top of the diesel range is the 190hp GLB 220 d 4Matic with 138-146g/km.
4Matic models also get an Off-Road Engineering Package, which offer a special off-road light function in combination with Multibeam LED headlamps to make it easier to see obstacles in rough terrain in the dark.
Optional driver assistance systems include partial autonomous driving using the Active Distance Assist Distronic while Mercedes’ Active Steering Assist has been updated with intuitive Active Lange Change Assist.
The GLB also features the new Mercedes MBUX infotainment system including ‘Hey Mercedes’ functionality.
The new GLB is being manufactured at the Aguascalientes (Mexico) plant and, for the Chinese market, in Beijing. Pricing will be announced prior to its launch at the end of the year.
