Ford has revealed the new Focus ST, which brings new powertrains and technology intended to make it the most responsive and agile Focus ST ever.

Ford Focus ST

On sale in Europe from this summer, the new model is available in both hatch and estate forms and uses Ford’s new C2 architecture along with bespoke suspension, braking and powertrain configurations.

The engine line-up includes Ford’s 280hp 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with anti-lag technology developed for the Ford GT supercar and F-150 Raptor pick-up. It also gets Ford’s 190hp 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine; the most powerful diesel engine ever offered for a Ford Focus model.

It also marks Ford’s first application of an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) for a front-wheel drive vehicle, bringing a sharper response using computer-controlled pre-emptive actuation.

A choice of six-speed manual or new, quick-shifting, seven-speed automatic transmissions is offered, and Selectable Drive Modes technology is introduced to the Focus ST for the first time,.

Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) – standard for five-door EcoBoost variants – enhances the short long arm (SLA) independent rear suspension configuration for ultimate refinement.

Onboard tech includes Adaptive Cruise Control, now enhanced with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane-Centring, plus Ford’s Adaptive Front Lighting System with new camera-based predictive curve light, Active Park Assist 2 and head-up display – a first for Europe. The Focus ST also offers Evasive Steering Assist, billed as a segment-first technology that helps drivers steer around stopped or slower vehicles to help avoid collisions

Leo Roeks, Ford Performance director, Europe, said: “Intelligent technologies like eLSD and CCD make our all-new Focus ST the most ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ yet, able to switch from refined tourer to focused performance car at the push of a button. We’ve incorporated learnings from programmes including the Ford GT and Focus RS to develop a mid-size performance car with a degree of flexibility that’s unique in its segment.”
