Peugeot to launch five new EVs by 2025 in new E-Lion roadmap

Peugeot has confirmed plans to launch five new EVs in the next two years, supporting its goal to be fully electric by the end of the decade.

By 2030, all Peugeots sold in Europe will be 100% electric

Its plans – accompanied by a sneak preview of some of the models – were unveiled at its ‘E-Lion’ digital event which set out its strategy as an EV brand.

It’s adopting a three-stage approach to full electrification. By 2023, every model in the line-up will be electrified, while by the middle of the decade every model will come with a fully electric option. And by 2030, all Peugeots sold in Europe will be 100% electric.

At the centre of this strategy is the arrival of the five EVs: E-308, E-308 SW (its first European electric estate), E-408, E-3008 and E-5008.

The electric 308 and 308 SW will be powered by a brand-new electric powertrain, delivering 156hp and with a WLTP range of over 249 miles (400km). Peugeot also says the models will provide class-leading efficiency, with an average energy consumption of 12.7kWh.

A fully electric version of the 408 will also arrive. The fastback crossover launches this quarter in plug-in hybrid guise, sitting at the top of its compact car line-up above the 308/SW and 3008 SUV, and an electric version will follow. Details of the powertrain have not been revealed but it’s likely to come from the 308 models.

The E-3008 will be revealed in the second half of 2023, delivering a choice of three powertrains, including a dual motor all-wheel drive version, and a range of up to 435 miles (700km). It’s the first car to launch on Stellantis’ new STLA Medium platform.

These will be followed by a new ‘BEV-by-design’ line-up, supported by bespoke Stellantis electric platforms and previewed by the Inception concept revealed earlier this month. It’s believed the first to debut will be the new E-508 saloon.

Tech features already confirmed for the future BEV line-up include the next-generation i-Cockpit, including the Hypersquare steering wheel, using digital electric controls and steer-by-wire technology. They will also employ three new Stellantis tech innovations: the STLA-Brain operating system, loaded OTA; STLA-Smartcockpit for infotainment and driver display systems, and STLA-Autodrive autonomous driving systems.

Peugeot is also launching new mild hybrid technology, rolling out a 48V powertrain this year for use with the 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 and 408. This combines either a 100hp or 136hp PureTech petrol engine with a six-speed electrified dual-clutch gearbox which incorporates a 29hp electric motor. The result is increased low-end torque and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption (starting from 126g of CO2/km in 3008), compared to standard petrol-engined models.

But the E-Lion project is not just about vehicle electrification; it adopts a holistic 360-degree approach to going net zero through the brand’s ‘5 Es’.

These encompass: Ecosystem – including the wider products and services; Experience; Electric; Efficiency and Environment. All have the end goal of sustainability and the carmaker’s commitment to achieve carbon net zero by 2038.

Its focus on driving down emissions extends from vehicle electrification to manufacture – including sourcing and supply chain strategies as well as the overall composition and structure of the car. It’s also designing new products with a focus on a global life cycle strategy and a Circular Economy, extending the lifetime of vehicles from around 15 years for an ICE car at present to 20-25 years for Stellantis BEVs.

Linda Jackson, Peugeot CEO, said: “Carbon net zero, is not three words, it’s a mindset, an approach, one that we all need to embrace as organisations and as individuals. Equally the E-Lion Project is not a strategy and a ppt deck. This is a project that we are committed to delivering on because it is critically important for us and future generations.”

The brand also says it’s working to offer new solutions for affordability – including through two new pay-month mobility services – and to provide more connected apps, including with smart charging.

Jackson finished: “E-Lion Project will define Peugeot’s strategy as an EV brand and ensure we stay connected to the pulse of society to deliver mobility that lives up to our brand values.”

It provides a showcase of the new techniques the brand will introduce to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 50% by 2030 in Europe and to become fully carbon net zero by 2038.
