The Netherlands has become the first European nation to greenlight Tesla’s AI-driven Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology for public roads, clearing a path for a broader rollout in Europe.

The regulatory landmark marks the first time that FSD will be available on customer vehicles in Europe and, Tesla says, marks a milestone towards a future with safer roads for all on the continent.

The FSD (Supervised) rollout will begin in the Netherlands via over-the-air software update in the coming days. The technology is a suite of advanced driver assistance features that enable Tesla vehicles to drive almost anywhere with active driver supervision.

The FSD (Supervised) system can navigate city streets, manoeuvre intersections, make lane changes and more while the driver is ‘hands off’ but actively supervising. It’s designed to learn through experience; the global Tesla vehicle fleet is collectively exposed to over 500 years of driving data every day.

When enabled, FSD (Supervised) primarily uses the vehicle’s external cameras and artificial intelligence to navigate. All real-time analysis of the environment – including the processing of camera feeds and sensor data – occurs directly on the vehicle’s onboard AI computer. While local processing is the standard, Tesla uses Fleet Learning to improve system capabilities over time via over-the-air software updates. Participation in Fleet Learning is based on consent and only anonymous data will be shared with Tesla for this purpose.

In its current form, FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. The driver remains responsible at all times during operations.

According to Tesla, when FSD (Supervised) is engaged, collisions are up to seven times less likely per kilometre driven compared to manual driving alone. As of today, over 14 billion kilometres have been driven with FSD (Supervised) around the globe.

Prior to customer deployment, Tesla conducted extensive internal testing of FSD (Supervised) across Europe – covering more than 1.6 million kilometres with FSD (Supervised) active.

Late last year, the carmaker began offering FSD (Supervised) Ride-Along experiences in select European countries. Open to the public in Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands and Spain, this campaign enabled over 13,000 people to experience the feature firsthand on European roads.

The EV brand is also working toward regulatory approvals for FSD (Supervised) in other European countries.
