Toyota extends airbag recall

By / 10 years ago / News / No Comments

Last year saw carmakers including Toyota, Honda, Nissan Motor Co and BMW recall about 3.6 million vehicles because of issues with the Takata airbag inflators that could cause them to explode.

Now, Toyota has recalled a further 650,000 vehicles – all in Japan – as it says the involved serial numbers provided by the supplier were incomplete, and did not include all of the potentially involved inflators. It also said that it was modifying the remedy that it was using.

For vehicles which have not received the 2013 recall remedy previously, Toyota is changing the remedy from "inspect and replace the inflator if it is involved" to "replace the inflator with a new one".

Meanwhile, for vehicles which were inspected and did not receive a replacement inflator, Toyota will re-notify the owners and replace the inflator with a new one.

The carmaker said the involved vehicles were equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant.  Improperly manufactured propellant could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.

In April, Toyota announced the recall of over 6.4m vehicles globally to fix a number of separate issues.
