A new ‘first-of-its-kind’ electric traffic management truck has been developed in the UK, bringing a 124-mile electric range with zero tailpipe emissions.

The new Master ZE L3H1 Traffic Management vehicle

The fully functioning traffic management vehicle has been developed by VMS Fleet Management in partnership with Kier Group, which is running it on its long-term fleet and will thoroughly test it over the coming 12 months.

It’s based on a Master Z.E. L3H1 3.1 tonne vehicle supplied to VMS by Renault Trucks UK and converted by CPD Bodies. Features include an S&F rear folding ramp, full arrest system, toolbox, steps and handles for easy access, toast rack and reverse alarm and camera. The traffic management vehicle also features a full telematics system from Geotab.

VMS and Kier have already tied up on a fully electric welfare van and the new Master ZE L3H1 Traffic Management vehicle will also help Kier create a greener fleet for the future.

It’s the first in a new family of electric traffic management vehicles and will be joined by a medium 5.2-7.5-tonne vehicle in 2021 and a large 18-26-tonne vehicle in 2022, which will all be heading to Kier when complete for long-term rental and evaluation.

Martin James, managing director of VMS Fleet Management, said: “This marks the second EV innovation from us with Kier and just one of many EV firsts from VMS this year. We’re always on the lookout to create new-generation vehicles that will make a difference for our customers, as well as the environment. We are excited to continue to work with Kier Group who, like ourselves really value the benefits of sustainable transport, and look forward to making more exciting announcements with them soon.”
