Volkswagen is pushing ahead with plans for a compact electric SUV with the unveiling of the ID. Cross Concept at the Munich motor show.

The production ID. Cross will debut in summer 2026

It’s positioned as an all-electric counterpart to the Volkswagen T-Cross – in the same way that the ID. Polo also shown at the event, as the production version of the ID.2 all concept, will sit alongside the conventional Polo, under the brand’s new naming strategy.

The ID. Cross Concept is based on the latest version of VW’s MEB platform with a front-mounted 211hp motor. Battery details haven’t been disclosed but the WLTP range forecast is up to 420km (260 miles).

Similar in size to the current T-Cross, it’s designed with a “big space – small dimensions” approach. Boot volume is above average for the class with 450 litres and there’s a 25-litre ‘frunk’ while compact exterior dimensions enable urban use. VW also stresses that the compact SUV is “an all-rounder suitable for families and friends, which also handles longer journeys with ease”.

Supporting the lifestyle focus, the ball coupling is designed for a drawbar load of 75 kg – enough to transport two e-bikes. The maximum trailer weight is up to 1,200kg.

Exterior design opts for a “positive personality” that employs graphics and a 3D light signature to give the impression that the car is ‘smiling’.

The interior on the concept has been conceived as an “interior oasis with a lounge-style ambience”. Onboard technologies include a redesigned multi-function steering wheel with clear button control and a pair of central displays that include an 11-inch instrument screen and 13-inch infotainment system.

Pricing hasn’t been announced but it’s expected to cost around £25,000 in line with VW’s plans for affordable electric mobility.

It’s one of a series of new affordable EVs showcased by Volkswagen Group at Munich, also including the ID. Polo, Škoda Epiq and the Cupra Raval, as part of the Volkswagen Brand Group Core’s Electric Urban Car family. These new models will sit in the entry-level segment of electric mobility, featuring targeted use of synergies and economies of scale to enable “particularly attractive electric cars in Europe, both technically and in terms of price”.
