The midsize SUV is one of the brand’s best-selling models and the new third-generation model has big boots to fill.

It’s built on VW’s new MQB evo platform and has a slightly larger footprint, up some 3cm, while height, width and wheelbase remain almost identical. Luggage space is up by 37 litres to 652 litres.

Big news is the arrival of new eHybrid plug-in hybrid models. Available with 204hp and 272hp power outputs, these deliver electric-only ranges of 100km (62 miles), up by some 30 miles. AC charging will be faster while fast DC charging will also be available as standard for the first time.

Other engine options include mild hybrid eTSI turbo petrol engines and conventional TSI turbo petrols, plus one TDI turbo diesel engine. All engines will now solely come with an automatic direct-shift gearbox (DSG) paired with steering wheel paddles; no manual transmissions will be offered.

External design has been made over and gets new curvier looks with a revamped front-end while VW’s IQ.Light HD matrix headlights, cascaded down from the Touareg, make their debut as an option and the rear gains a new LED strip.

The interior has also had a revamp and features a new Digital Cockpit, using the brand’s MIB4 fourth-generation infotainment system paired with a 12.9-inch screen as standard (or 15-inch as an option). Designed for easier use with a new menu structure and graphics, it also delivers new digital services and apps. Other debuts include a new rotary control on the centre console, revised head-up display, new voice assistant and a pneumatic massage function for the front seats.

The 2024 Tiguan also features the new DCC Pro adaptive chassis control system, again brought down from higher vehicle classes and said to optimise comfort and dynamics, alongside Vehicle Dynamics Manager technology seen in the current Golf GI and latest-generation Park Assist for automated parking spot manoeuvring.

First launched in 2007, the Tiguan is one of the most successful Volkswagen models in the world today, having sold more than 7.6 million units over the previous two generations.

The new model will reach dealerships from the first quarter of 2024.
