Latest VDIK data shows that January recorded 218,365 new passenger car registrations, an increase of 3.3%.

Diesel registrations accounted for more than 106,000 units, maintaining a similar volume to January 2015 but with a slightly lower market share at 49%.

VDIK president Volker Lange said: “The stable slight growth course of the passenger car market in 2015 is carrying on through the start of 2016. The volume of private registration is up 1.5% over the same month last year. The VDIK member companies are still clearly stronger represented in the private segment with a market share of now 43.4%.”

Light commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5t represented the strongest segment in terms of volume and were up 11% over the same month last year.

With a growth rate of over 12%, heavy commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 16t also contributed to the good overall result for January 2016.

Volker Lange added: “For the year 2016 on the whole, I do expect, as projected last December, that the cargo van segment will grow and that the overall volume of new registrations will remain at the same level as last year.”
