Toyota has overhauled its Aygo X crossover city car with the arrival of a full hybrid and a new GR Sport grade.

The hybrid powertrain, already available in Yaris and Yaris Cross, will fully replace the 1.0-litre petrol engine, giving higher power and sharper acceleration.

It’s also expected to deliver the lowest CO2-emissions of any non-plug-in car on the market at 86g/km – compared to 109-113g/km for the current petrol.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-electric hybrid powertrain outputs 116hp – up by 44hp compared to the previous regular petrol – and enables 0-100km/h acceleration in less than 10 seconds.

It’s also quieter than its forebear thanks to new noise-damping components, including dash silencers, bonnet insulation and an engine underbody cover, combined with an updated exhaust system and silencer. Higher-grade models also get thicker window glass and additional soundproofing throughout the body.

The 231-litre boot space of the third-generation Aygo is carried over with the help of some nifty work to accommodate the hybrid components. The two stacks of battery cells are positioned alongside each other across the width of the floor in a longitudinal layout beneath the rear seats, cutting space compared to the parallel configuration for other Toyota hybrids, while the auxiliary battery shifts to under the load compartment. There’s also a longer front overhang.

The new hybrid also gets a bolder design compared to the old model, adopting a new, more aggressive-looking bonnet, headlights and grille, augmented by 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

An optional bi-tone colour scheme is available and an exclusive Canvas roof style also arrives as an option on higher grades.

The interior design is carried over but gets a new 7.0-inch digital driver display and heater control panel, while an electronic parking brake comes as standard on all grades, as do two USB-C charging ports. A new wireless smartphone charger, powered folding mirrors, and nanoeX technology for improved air quality will also also available on higher grades in some markets, but are yet to be confirmed for the UK.

The latest Toyota Safety Sense safety and driver assistance package, such as enhanced Pre-Collision System, Lane Trace Assist and Road Sign Assist tech, as well as a new Emergency Driving Stop System and Proactive Driving Assist.

Also new are over-the-air software updates, enabling technology such as safety systems to be updated without dealer visits.

For the first time, an Aygo X GR Sport version is available, pairing an exclusive Mustard bi-tone colour scheme with a black bonnet, along with the ‘G-pattern’ mesh seen elsewhere in the GR family and GR Sport alloy wheels. The cabin is adorned with black and grey accents, plus GR logo embroidery. It’s also designed for more dynamic driving, with a stiffer chassis and sharper steering.

The new Aygo X Hybrid will go on sale in the UK and the first European markets at the end of 2025. Details of the UK model range and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
