Nissan uncovers solar‑powered Ariya Concept
Nissan has unveiled a solar‑powered Ariya concept, revealing how future electric vehicles could harness the world’s most abundant renewable energy source.
Showcased for Clean Energy Day (26 January 2026), the concept is equipped with a 3.8m² custom solar‑panel system using high-efficiency photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight directly into DC power.
Integrated into the hood, roof and tailgate, these polymer and glass-based solar panels could capture up to 14.3 miles of extra range on a bright sunny day, according to real-world testing.
This optimises energy use and reduces reliance on external charging infrastructure.
The tests show that in cities with high solar exposure – such as Barcelona – the vehicle can generate an average of 10.9 miles of daily solar driving range or 11.7 miles/day of extra range in New Delhi.
But the data from year‑round averages shows even those in London can benefit, with Nissan’s data indicating 6.3 miles of solar-powered range a day in the UK capital.
Nissan said the technology could unlock new freedoms, with drivers able to reduce their charging frequency by up to 65%, depending on usage.
It also supports the Japanese carmaker’s global ambition of achieving carbon neutrality across the lifecycle of its products and operations by 2050.

“This concept is not just a technical milestone; it’s a vision of how Nissan intends to lead the next phase of electric mobility.”
