Viasat continues push into Eastern Europe telematics market with Cefin Systems acquisition

The company, which is headquartered in Italy, said the CS Fleet brand would be added to its international telematics network and would be the channel for telematics services developed by Viasat Group’s R&D centres in Turin, Rome, Milan, London and Bucharest, for sale to markets in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey.

The purchase of Cefin is the first stage of Viasat’s current growth project to invest between €10m and €15m over the next three years as the group expands into Eastern Europe.

The acquisition also forms part of Viasat Group’s strategy of internationalisation, which started in 2013 with the creation of Viasat Servicios Telemáticos in Spain and continued with the acquisition of 70% of Enigma Vehicle Systems Limited, a leading UK telematics firm, in 2014.

Marco Petrone, head of international corporate development and CEO of the new Romanian subsidiary, commented: “Viasat Group’s exports have tripled since 2013 and total revenues increased from €39m to €45m in 2014. Forecasts for 2015 anticipate turnover reaching €55m by the end of this year, with growth in Eastern Europe vindicating our expansion plans.”

Cati Mocanu, general manager of Cefin Systems in Bucharest, added: “We are proud to confirm that, after almost 10 years of collaboration, Cefin Systems has become a member of the worldwide Viasat ‘family’ of telematics specialists. This opens new market opportunities for GPS tracking in Romania, especially for the insurance market. We are both excited and prepared to meet this new challenge.”
