Volkswagen has given a preview of its forthcoming ID. family flagship with the reveal of the ID. Aero concept.

The ID. Aero previews a fully electric four-door production sedan that will launch globally

Showcased in China, it heralds a fully electric four-door production sedan that will be offered worldwide in the future. Two China-specific version will arrive in the second half of 2023, one for each of the brand’s ventures there, while a European series will start production in Emden, Germany, in the same year.

Globally, it will be the sixth member of the ID. family, joining the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and China-only ID.6 SUV as well as the ID. Buzz, and is expected to be called the ID. 6.

As with the other ID models, it’s based on Volkswagen’s MEB modular electric architecture and sits almost five metres long, featuring a long wheelbase, short overhangs and an “exceptionally spacious” interior.

The MEB platform also enables digital connectivity and over-the-air update capabilities.

The concept ID. Aero features a 77kWh lithium-ion battery with a WLTP range of up to 385 miles (620km), but other battery options are expected to be offered. Powertrain specifics are yet to be revealed but it’s likely to have a choice of single-motor/rear-wheel drive or dual-motor/four-wheel drive set-ups.

Design features of the concept include a wrap-around light strip, turbine-design 22-inch two-tone wheels and a Polar Light Blue Metallic paintwork with a contrasting high-gloss black roof. It also uses illuminated touch surfaces to replace door handles, further reducing drag.
