Volkswagen hot hatches enter new era with all-electric 226hp ID. Polo GTI

Half a century after defining the hot hatch, Volkswagen has kicked off a new era with the debut of the 226hp all-electric ID. Polo GTI at the Nürburgring.

Uncovered just weeks after the standard ID. Polo, the performance-focused version blends iconic performance with new era technology.

It’s positioned as a “powerful and highly agile compact sports car” that’s also “suitable for everyday driving”. Rivals include the Cupra Raval that it shares VW Group’s MEB+ platform with, plus the Alpine A290 and newly uncovered Vauxhall Corsa GSE.

The first fully electric iteration of the GTI in its 50-year history, the ID. Polo GTI elevates the standard model with 226hp from a single front motor, 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and exclusive performance features such as standard DCC adaptive suspension, a front differential lock and a lower ride height.

Powered is supplied by a 52kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, also used for the 211hp top-rung version of the conventional Polo. It’s good for a WLTP range of up to 4243km (263 miles) and can be charged at DC stations with up to 105kW. VW says it’s been set up with a particularly constant charging curve, which means the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in about 24 minutes at a DC rapid charging station.

Volkswagen promises “particularly dynamic handling and that unique GTI feeling”, making its first electric GTI also feel like a quintessential GTI.

The Wolfsburg carmaker says the clear design, GTI features and powerful front-wheel drive continue the legacy of the first Golf GTI from 1976, while adding in new features such as the front differential lock,  adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering. The new performance Polo also gets a GTI driving profile, which is activated by a button on the sports steering wheel to instantly transform the chassis and powertrain, complete with bespoke, performance-themed cockpit graphics.

Designed to stand out from the standard ID. Polo, the GTI adds aggressive styling, red accents and 19-inch wheels.

An iconic red stripe, a hallmark of the sporty brand since the first Golf GTI, spans the front of the ID. Polo GTI. It features a 3D GTI logo on the left and sits below an LED light strip, illuminated VW badge, and standard IQ.Light LED matrix headlights. The lower air intake showcases a characteristic GTI honeycomb pattern, featuring two red vertical elements designed to resemble motorsport towing eyes.

The interior is dominated by a red and black colour theme that produces contrasting red top stitching on the new GTI sports steering wheel and red marking incorporated in the steering wheel rim at 12 o’clock, similar to the marking commonly used in motor sports. Other motorsport nods include upholstery that reinterprets the legendary tartan check of historic GTI models.

The cabin also gets a multi-function sports steering wheel, steering wheel paddles for adjusting the recuperation level, a 10.25-inch digital cockpit that can transform into a late Mk1 Golf-style instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment system touch display.

As with the standard ID. Polo, the GTI has 441 litres of boot space and 1,240 with the rear seats down – significantly larger than the 351 and 1,125 litres in the current petrol model. It also comes with a detachable ball coupling with a drawbar load of 75kg and a towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes (braked, 12% gradient).

Prices for the UK are yet to be announced but the price in Germany will be just under €39k (c.£33,950). That compares to €24,995 (c.£21,760) for the standard model.

Order books are set to open in October and first customer deliveries are expected in early 2027.
