Jaguar confirms ‘Type 01’ name for 1000hp+ electric four-door GT
Jaguar has officially entered a new era with confirmation that its next-generation, luxury four-door electric grand tourer will be branded Type 01.
The world will get its first glimpse of Jaguar’s highly anticipated electric future when camouflaged Type 01 prototypes hit the track at the Monaco E-Prix, more than a year after the carmaker created a furore by showcasing its controversial rebrand while stopping sales ain a strategic reset as an electric-only ultra-luxury brand.
Ahead of the dynamic debut, the brand is paving the way for its rebirth with a teaser image showing the Type 01 script on a strikethrough motif where the bonnet meets the windscreen.
The ‘Type’ designation honours the brand’s legendary predecessors, while ‘0’ is for zero tailpipe emissions and ‘1’ is for the first of a new generation.
First appearing on the victorious 1951 Le Mans C-Type, the ‘Type’ moniker represents Jaguar’s signature dual character of exhilarating performance with refinement and composure. This celebrated balance remains defined by benchmarks such as the E-Type and F-Type.
For the Type 01, the new name unites the brand’s history of innovation in design, technology and performance with the most advanced Jaguar ever, featuring an innovative new body architecture, along with tri‑motor technology that delivers more than 1,000hp and over 1,300Nm of torque.
Rawdon Glover, managing director at Jaguar, said: “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’”
The Type 01 prototypes will appear on the streets of Monaco wearing a distinctive camouflage wrap, ahead of Jaguar TCS Racing competing in the Formula E race weekend.
The production-ready Jaguar Type 01 is expected to be revealed this September and start deliveries early 2027. The four-door luxury GT will feature a long bonnet and, notably, no rear window. Pricing is expected to be well over £100,000, aligning with a new upmarket, low-volume strategy. The brand says the Type 01 “exuberant modernist design, pioneering technology and instinctive driving dynamics” will underpin future Jaguar models.
