Volkswagen ID. Tiguan electric SUV teased as successor to ID.4 and 5

Volkswagen has confirmed the arrival of a new electric SUV in early 2027, dubbed the ID. Tiguan and continuing the best-seller’s legacy.

Previewed by a near-production concept that’s carrying out final road testing under camouflage wrap, the new model is essentially a heavily facelifted version of the current ID.4 and ID.5 that adopts the Tiguan badge to draw on an established, globally recognised name.

It’s the third iconic Volkswagen moniker to transition into the company’s electric vehicle line-up, following the arrival of the ID. Polo and ID. Cross earlier this year. This shift directly supports the brand-equity pillar of the company’s ‘True Volkswagen’ global realignment strategy.

Volkswagen said the switch to an established name would provide customers with “clear orientation and stands as a strong product brand for a clearly defined vehicle concept”.

As with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside traditional combustion and hybrid versions of its namesake.

Thomas Schäfer, chief executive of the Volkswagen Brand, highlighted the importance of the move.

“More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name. The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future.”

Mechanically, the ID. Tiguan will continue to use the MEB architecture shared with the current ID.4 and ID.5. Volkswagen promises the updated model “builds on the strengths of the best-seller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation and innovative technologies”.

According to reports, the ID. Tiguan carries over the battery and motor combinations from the outgoing ID.4.

These include a 191hp entry-level rear-wheel-drive version, paired with a new 58kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery.

The rear-wheel-drive Pro variant teams up a 286hp motor with a 77kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) pack.

Finally, the dual-motor 4Motion all-wheel-drive flagship delivers 299hp of performance and is paired with the same 77kWh NMC battery.

WLTP range is reportedly up to 373 miles (600km) while the ID. Tiguan is also said to have a significantly boosted braked towing capacity of 2.0 tonnes.

Prices are expected to start at around £38,000. More details will be announced at the official reveal next month.
