Volkswagen has showed off the latest performance options in its Golf range, introducing new GTD, GTI and GTE models that now each benefit from the same power outputs. In addition, the brand has premiered its flagship powerful Touareg R SUV and offered a glimpse at the new ID4 electric car.

This year alone, Volkswagen will release 8 electrified models and by 2024 the company will have invested €11bn in electro-mobility. The aim is to make electric cars affordable for all markets. The ID4 builds on the ID3 with an SUV design and promising up to 500km range.

The Touareg R is the first hybrid amongst Volkswagen’s range of R performance models. Plug-in hybrid power will appear in many more Volkswagen R models, said Frank Welsch, Volkswagen’s chief development officer, due to the combined power output possible from an electric motor and internal combustion engine. He added that power also makes it attractive for towing, thanks to enhanced torque.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTE is an evolution of the old car and features a larger battery, offering a range of up to 60km. Next up is the GTI, which features a digital dashboard as standard and offers enhanced suspension, which is said to be more entertaining to drive. The car outputs the same 245hp as the GTE model, which is a first, with the older GTE car always having been less potent. The GT-duo are joined by a 200hp GTD.
