Revealed as First Hydrogen’s Generation I fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) continue testing, the teaser images divulge the work on a bolder face and identity for Generation II.

The large panel vans can be scaled to different vehicle heights and lengths and have been designed by the global mobility engineers at EDAG, which works on top-level development of concept cars, prototypes and expertise in the international automotive industry.

The images give details of the front-end, revealing a smart digital panel and the configuration of the daytime running lights (DRL).

The rear image shows vertical tail-lights either side of the main cargo access point. The design factors in the ability to accommodate different types of doors, including tailgates, barn doors and roller shutters, while also enabling outstanding visibility. Target markets for the new vans include express delivery, grocery, construction and utilities work, emergency services and vehicle recovery.

Bernat Costa, design director at EDAG Spain, said: “The pure design of the light panels complements the vehicle’s functional purpose, establishing a First Hydrogen design signature and illuminating the van to improve its visibility for other road users in city and urban landscapes. This is especially important for delivery and roadside assistance vehicles, which need to make regular stops. The clean aesthetic also reflects the vehicles’ zero-emissions status.”

The first-generation vehicles were revealed last year and are now undergoing mileage accumulation and testing before starting operational trials with fleets from the UK Aggregated Hydrogen Freight Consortium (AHFC), which include national supermarkets, utilities providers, roadside assistance and healthcare services.

The fuel cell vans have a 400-600km range (around 250 to 370 miles) while their refuel time of around five minutes is also a significant benefit compared to battery electric vans.

Steve Gill, CEO of Automotive for First Hydrogen, said: “Following the success of our Generation I demonstrator vans that prove our concept and technology capabilities, with this next series of vehicles, our goal is to provide the commercial van market with a complete solution for operational flexibility.

“This sneak preview indicates the careful consideration that has gone into combining aesthetics with engineering excellence; the vehicle configuration and signature light panels show a solid standout design that is iconic and will be a real head turner.”

Further details on First Hydrogen’s next generation of green hydrogen vans will follow in the coming weeks as the project progresses.
