Building on Honda's first Hydrogen fuel cell-powered model, the FCX Clarity, the new concept features a newly developed fuel-cell stack that is 33% smaller than the previous one and yet achieves output of more than 100 kW and output density as high as 3.1 kW/L, improving the overall performance by approximately 60%.

The carmaker said the next-generation model should provide a driving range of more than 300 miles (483km) with a quick refuelling time of about three to five minutes at a pressure of 70MPa.

The latest concept also uses offers greater passenger space than the FCX Clarity, including seating for up to five people.

Honda said that the FCV will be the world's first FCV sedan with the entire powertrain, including the downsized fuel-cell stack housed within the engine bay, enabling full cabin space and also facilitating offshoot models.

The production version is scheduled to go on sale in Japan by the end of March 2016 and subsequently in the US and Europe.
