Seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf revealed

By / 12 years ago / News / No Comments

The first Golf launched 36 years ago, and Volkswagen has since sold 29 million vehicles worldwide. In its latest incarnation, the car uses the Group’s new MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform, which allows components to be shared between classes and brands, in turn allowing for a broader selection of powertrains, including hybrid and fully electric versions.

Sales begin in October, with engine choices comprising two petrol and two diesel units, and both petrols feature lower CO2 emissions than the outgoing 1.6 TDI model. The 85hp 1.2 TSI returns 4.9l/100km and emits 113g/km CO2, while the 115hp 1.4 TSI can shut off two of its cylinders at low loads to cut consumption to 4.8l/100km with CO2 emissions of 112g/km.

The two diesel engines offered at launch will be the familiar 105hp 1.6 TDI, at 3.8l/100km and 99g/km, and a new 150hp 2.0 TDI at 106g/km with fuel consumption at 4.1l/100km, undercutting key rival the 2.2 i-DTEC Honda Civic by 4g/km. Details of an ultra-low CO2 Bluemotion version have not been announced yet.

As well as a more spacious cabin and boot, the new Golf is home to a plethora of new features and technology, including adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist and optional forward-folding front passenger seat to extend the load length. Four driving modes – Eco, Sport, Normal and Individual – allow the car’s settings to be tailored to the driver’s mood.

Inside, the driver-focused dashboard features a new-generation touch-screen infotainment system. All models include a 5.8-inch display, with touch gestures designed to be similar to operating a smartphone. Bluetooth, USB and an auxiliary connection are included across the range, and a wired phone connection can be fitted inside the central armrest for the first time in a Golf.

Pricing and specification will be announced closer to the Paris Motor Show, with the first cars due to arrive at dealerships in January 2013.
