Stellantis will launch a line-up of “groundbreaking, small and affordable” electric cars to help more drivers go electric.

The dinky EVs will be developed across multiple group brands and will go into production in 2028 at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy, which currently builds the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

The new models will feature “cutting-edge design” and will be powered by “world-class BEV technologies to be developed with selected partners to boost affordability and achieve an accelerated time-to-market”.

The E-Car Project ties in with the EU’s plans for a new small EV class. Announced at the end of 2025 in the EU Automotive Package, the proposals include incentivising new small EVs under a new initiative inspired by Japan’s Kei car.

The so-called E-Car class is expected to address the downturn in the small affordable car segment in Europe in recent years.

The European Commission has recognised the potential for the electric city car segment to boost European design and manufacturing jobs while playing a vital role in supporting the wider adoption of full electric vehicles for convenient, everyday, city-centric mobility.

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa commented: “The E-Car is a concept that finds its natural match in the small car success that runs deep in our European Stellantis DNA. Our customers are calling for a revival of small, stylish vehicles, proudly produced in Europe, which are also affordable and environmentally friendly. Stellantis is answering their call with exciting new models for multiple brands.”

The automotive giant said the plans to manufacture its new E-Car models at Pomigliano – with potentially significant production volumes – would tap into the plant’s long history of producing some of Europe’s most iconic and affordable cars, including the much-loved Fiat Panda.
