Alpine A390 uncovered as triple-motor electric SUV with 480hp
Alpine, Renault’s performance division, is taking the fight to the Porsche Macan Electric with a new electric SUV.
Based on the A390_β concept shown at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, it’s dubbed as a ‘sports fastback’ and based on the Renault Group’s Ampr Medium architecture also used for the Scenic E-Tech.
The second model in Alpine’s Dream Garage, it follows in the footsteps of the A290 electric hot hatch – the sporty sibling to the Renault 5 E-Tech – and precedes the all-electric A110 two-seat, all-electric coupé. The French performance car brand plans to launch seven new fully electric models by 2030.
Due on sale this autumn, it will play a key role in expanding Alpine’s customer base by attracting new buyers – including appealing to professional customers.
Described as a “racing car in a suit”, it uses a set of three electric motors – one at the front, two at the rear – to deliver all-wheel drive in a first for Alpine and enable the development of the Alpine Active Torque Vectoring system.
Two versions will be available: a GT model outputting 400hp and able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, with a 200km/h (124mph) top speed.
The top-rung GTS develops 470hp and up to 808Nm of maximum torque and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 220km/h (127mph).
The 89kWh lithium-ion battery is likely to give a WLTP range of up to 520-555km (323-344 miles) and can charge at up to 190kW DC.
The A390 GT comes with 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, Michelin Sport EV tyres, anodised brake callipers, and chrome logos. Inside, the sports seats are electric and heated, the Nappa leather-covered steering wheel is heated, there’s a 360-degree peripheral view on the central screen, and the 13-speaker sound system is by French luxury audio engineering firm Devialet.
The GTS version has 21-inch forged wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tyres. Front passengers get Sabelt-designed Nappa leather bucket seats with electric adjustment, heating and massage functions. The headliner is wrapped in microfibre; the 13-speaker audio system is the premium Devialet XtremeSound Audio System version, and the Alpine Telemetrics Expert system is included, as is the Driving and Parking Pack with semi-autonomous driving and automatic parking.
