Mercedes has unveiled its VLE MPV, ushering in its new Van Architecture.

Developed from the Vision V concept and described as “the best of two worlds”, the VLE combines limousine-like ride and handling with MPV-style versatility and will deliver up to 700km (434 miles) of range and new 800V technology from the electric versions, which succeed the EQV. Combustion-engined models will follow later, succeeding the V-Class passenger vehicles.

It’s the first model based on Mercedes’ new modular, flexible and scalable VAN.EA platform, marking the next stage of the brand’s electrification strategy and specifically designed for a future generation of Mercedes electric vans and luxury MPVs. Combustion-engined models will sit on the VAN.CA version. Mercedes has previously said the two platforms share around 70% of common parts and will be produced on the same line.

While the VLE is a luxury passenger MPV, the same underlying platform will be used for the next-generation Vito and Sprinter commercial vans starting in 2027.

Mercedes uses two versions of the platform to separate luxury from utility. The brand says the architecture allows for a clear differentiation between commercial vans in the premium segment and privately positioned van-based MPVs in the luxury segment.

The VLE will offer seating options for up to eight people through a variety of layouts. The front of the cabin is dominated by the MBUX Superscreen with a 10.25‑inch driver display, a 14‑inch central display and an optional 14‑inch screen for the front passenger. The VLE will also offer an “extraordinary spatial experience” that includes the Sky View panoramic roof, plus, on some models, a retractable, 31.3‑inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution, split-screen function and an eight-megapixel camera in the rear. Options also include adaptive air-suspension and rear-wheel steering.

First to arrive will be the VLE 300, which pairs a 115kWh battery option with a single, front-mounted 272hp motor and has the headline range of up to 700km. Thanks to the 800V architecture, it can be refilled with 355km (220 miles) of range in 15 minutes.

Future versions will include the VLE 250 with a smaller 80kWh battery pack, plus the dual-motor VLE 400 model with all-wheel drive and 415hp.
