Mazda has revealed its new CX-5 family SUV, which gets sharper design, extra onboard space and a new mild hybrid powertrain.

The third-generation of the midsize SUV will arrive in summer 2026 with a host of new features to build on the current edition’s bestselling success.

Design – a core part of the success of the two previous generations – has been gently evolved, retaining the CX-5’s familiar shape while incorporating distinctive Japanese design from Mazda’s Kodo – Soul of Motion ethos.

It’s also slightly longer than before overall while the extended wheelbase gives more interior space and an extra 61 litres of boot capacity; to further enhance practicality, there’s also wider-opening rear doors and a 40:20:40 split-folding bench.

Engine line-up also gets a shake-up with the arrival of a 141hp 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv petrol engine. Equipped with 24V Mazda M Hybrid technology with a brake-by-wire system, it replaces the previous 165hp Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre petrol and delivers improved torque of 238Nm of torque. The front-wheel-drive variant accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds and an all-wheel-drive version will be available, with a towing capacity of up to 2,000kg.

Four grades will be available – Prime-Line, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura – each with distinct interior finishes and equipment. Interior options include black or tan leather (Homura) and a two-tone black and white artificial leather and suede effect finish (Exclusive-Line).

The cabin gets a makeover, adding in a wraparound dash with new 12.9- or 15.6-inch centre displays, built-in Google apps and a reimagined HMI, while removing some buttons for a simplified layout. Drivers get a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and streamlined steering wheel controls while higher grades come with a 12-speaker Bose sound system. Finishing off the interior’s streamlined look are a new centre console with enhanced storage, a panoramic sunroof for higher trims and ambient lighting, which is fitted to the front door trims and exclusive to the range-topping Homura grade.

The all-new CX-5 will be available in the UK from summer 2026. UK pricing and full specifications will be revealed later. The current model is priced from £31,630.

The new model makes its debut just weeks after the CX-5 hit the landmark of over 100,000 sales in the UK. First launched in 2012 and debuted in updated second-generation guise in 2022, the midsize SUV is a landmark car in Mazda’s history, with production of over 4.5 million units to date.

It’s also proved highly popular in the UK, where it remains Mazda’s best-selling car, revered for its combination of driver appeal, practicality and style.
