Based on the S90 saloon, it’s likely that the V90 will be the bigger-selling version in Europe, targeting conquest customers from Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Jaguar XF.

Engine options are likely to match the saloon and Volvo has confirmed that it will offer the 410hp T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid in the V90, with an electric range of around 50km. Around a quarter of XC90 customers opt for this version.

Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president for design at Volvo Cars, said: “The modern premium estate is all about the intriguing combination of a luxurious experience with the functional origins of the estates silhouette. The sophisticated ambience of our new Volvo Interiors is combined with a great cargo space, providing the right kind of functionality – whether through connectivity or cargo and storage solutions.”

The V90 will get a public unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March, alongside European-market versions of the S90.
