Toyota and Uber strike major deal to boost EV and hybrid adoption for rideshare drivers

Toyota Motor Europe and Uber have launched a major partnership to accelerate the adoption of electrified vehicles among ride-hailing drivers and fleet operators across Europe.

Drivers can choose between hybrid, battery‑electric and approved used Toyota and Lexus vehicles as entry points into electrified mobility

The initiative aims to lower the financial and operational barriers that often prevent professional drivers from switching to cleaner vehicles.

The rollout begins this month across 10 European countries, with a gradual expansion planned for the rest of the continent.

Recognising that charging infrastructure and operating costs vary significantly across European cities, the partnership leverages Toyota’s ‘multi-pathway’ approach. Drivers can choose between hybrid, battery‑electric and approved used Toyota and Lexus vehicles as entry points into electrified mobility.

To make the transition economically viable, the programme bundles vehicle access with tailored financial services from Toyota Financial Services. Uber drivers and fleet partners will receive preferential rates on new and used vehicles.

The scheme also draws on Toyota Insurance Services to provide smart, connected insurance capabilities while Kinto Europe – Toyota’s European mobility services brand – will focus on expanding access to approved used vehicles for drivers, providing a lower‑cost entry point.

Toyota vehicles are already a staple within the rideshare industry due to their reliability and fuel efficiency. This formal partnership scales that presence to support hundreds of thousands of active drivers across Europe’s major transport hubs.

The partnership comes as European cities and the automotive industry accelerate efforts to reduce emissions while drivers face increasing operating costs and changing regulatory requirements.

Leonardo Carluccio, vice president of sales at Toyota Motor Europe, said: “Professional drivers need electrified vehicles that work for them economically as well as operationally. Through this partnership with Uber, we are improving access to vehicles, financing and mobility services that drivers can use immediately, while supporting the gradual shift towards lower‑emission fleets across European cities. This reflects Toyota’s belief that the transition to lower-emission mobility should be inclusive and accessible to all.”

The phased rollout represents a significant step forward for Uber’s ongoing global commitment to electrify its platform and reduce urban emissions in major metropolitan areas.

Raoul Philipse, senior director central operations at Uber, commented: “Partnering with Toyota allows us to offer an integrated solution that addresses vehicle ownership, financing, and maintenance. By lowering ownership obstacles, we are accelerating electrification while supporting drivers’ livelihoods in a changing world.”
